One of the definitions of a core in the Oxford dictionary is “the part of something that is central to the existence or character.” So, after eating a crisp Granny Smith apple you reach the core, the centre to its existence. The bit we discard and think nothing of. This has made me reflect on our own core, our centre and reason to be, and how important it is to stop and take note of our actions and see beyond our first impressions of others, because “At the Core” we find our real character. This is a large piece. It would sit well on a feature wall.

While standing at a well at a temple in Tokyo, this ancient tree provided shade for all. It was the magnificent root system that caught my eye. How long had this tree stood here for? How incredibly intricate and beautiful it was, staying strong and steadfast for probably centuries. This is quite a large piece and could sit as a feature on a wall. I used a palette knife to build up the colour in the background.

I paint a lot of leaves but this time I wanted to play with colour and abstract the leaves to make the painting more decorative. I had fun painting this one.
